Grocery shopping
Posted By admin on December 3, 2008
These are all tips sent by a bunch of really good friends I made through a Miniaturist group. Some of the tips are from the USA, so stores that are not in the Uk might be mentioned, and vice-versa, but saving money is saving money, whatever the currency!
Don’t go to the grocery store hungry!
All stores use psychology when placing things on a shelf. Usually, the ones they want you to buy are more at eye level or at the ends of aisles where they are more easily seen. Best thing is to not fall for it…this isn’t where the best buys will be unless there is a real fire sale at the end of the aisles. Check the bottom shelves!
Join a food club. I belonged to one where, for $12 a month, you could get over $100 worth of groceries.

Buy “store brands” (or generics) whenever possible. Name brand products usually cost more and store brands are often made by the same companies that make the name brands. I worked in several factories and know that a lot of products are made by the same company, and only the labels or packaging is changed. You can save a lot of money on the store brands and, with rare exception, the quality is the same.

Stores also put a lot of impulse stuff by the cash register to get you.
We avoid processed meats … they are expensive and usually not good for you. Cook a roast or ham or turkey and you have a couple of meals, a couple of lunches and maybe a few tubs of soup … all for less than the price of a Chinese or Pizza takeout.
A typical Sunday roast beef meal for us also yields a beef curry the next day, a couple of lunches, fried mashed potato for Mondays meal and maybe Tuesday. The big oven is only on for the Sunday meal.

I clip coupons out of the Sunday paper and try and buy the items also on sale. I buy my dishwashing Liquid and paper good at Wallgreens or CVS instead of the supermarket. Stuff like that is usually at a good sale price.
I also print out my own coupons from the internet. I type in the name of the store or product I’m interested in. Borders Bookstore is a good one for coupons.
