Heating advice from someone who knows!

Got some tips from my propane company today:

Heating systems need regular tune-ups. Have your heating system, including venting systems, checked annually by a qualified service technician.

Replace your furnace filter monthly.

Keep your thermostat set at a constant comfort level-generally between 68° F and 70° F-or consider installing a programmable thermostat to regulate your home’s temperature when you are not here.

Protect against drafts around windows and doors by caulking and weather stripping. ( Draught excluder strips, available from most DIY stores in the UK))

Turn down your water heater from the standard 140° F to 130° F. This will help save more than 10 percent on your water-heating bill.

Extend your water heater’s life and increase energy efficiency by following manufacturer’s instructions for draining your water heater every six months to remove lime deposits and sediment.

Install flow-restricting showerheads. You can reduce hot water usage by up to 50 percent without affecting shower pressure.

Repair leaky faucets.(Taps) A leak that fills a coffee cup in 10 minutes wastes 3,200 gallons of water a year.

If you have teenagers, set a timer for their showers. I saved almost $50 on the water bill last month by monitoring them. I got a lot of dirty looks but it was worth it.
